The U.S. houses over 5,000 data centers, about 33% of data centers in the world, and with the rapid growth of AI, more data centers – and ultimately more energy – will be needed over the next five years to meet demand. Additionally, data center sites are expanding and being built to larger capacities than ever before. Data centers that previously had an average capacity of 20 megawatts are now being built at 1,000 megawatts at a single site.
While there is a wide range of projections, the increase in data centers and their capacity is expected to increase overall U.S. power consumption. Data center power consumption is currently a 4% of U.S. electricity generation and could increase to between 5% to 9% annually by 2030.
